This map shows the population size and distribution of villages in Sussex after the Norman Conquest in 1086AD.
The plotted data is an extract from the Open Domesday Book.
The key to the colours are to the lower right as you can see most of the 'wasted' villages start from the Bexhill area and progress inland
to the boundary of Andredsweald the 'impassible forest' as described bu the Anglo Saxon Chronicles.

Total Population of the 303 Domesday Villages in 1086AD shown is 7458 This would equate to a Fyrd(national service) of approximately 426 soldiers.
Please Note that the estimate for the Fyrd is based on 6% of the
population(excluding Priests and Slaves) being eligible for military duties.
