This map shows the position of locations of type 'town or village or hamlet' containing 'ham' centered on Coldham in Cambridgeshire. Alongside the location map is one from http://flood.firetree.net of the same scale, showing the high tide level of 5 metres so you can comparison current day with Saxon times.

As you can see the Hams still seem to cluster along the edges of the Wash and Fens which were Tidal. This map shows the occurrance of villages containing 'HAM' a saxon term we believe originally meant near to the sea, and in later times near to water. A number of the HAM's in the middle of the Wash are on small islands.
